CANCELLATION F.A.Q

In the coming weeks, you will receive a reserved entry link to register for 2021 at no additional cost.

FREE DEFERMENT TO 2021 EVENT
COST: FREE
TIME TO DEFER: When registration opens through August 31st, 2020 (We hope to open registration by the end of the month)  This would also be the same time for another runner using your deferred entry.
COST AFTER August 31st, 2020: Full Price
HOW: You will receive a private link to register via www.runsignup.com that you can use or you can pass to a friend to use.   We will get this set up as soon as registration opens for 2021.

The Deferred entry is transferable, meaning, you can give this entry to another person if you cannot race next year.

If you cannot race or give your race entry to someone, we will allow you to defer to a 2021 Virtual option so you can get your bib, medal and shirt in 2021.

2021 DATE

We are currently working with the City of Wilmington, Town of Wrightsville Beach, the NCDOT and the Wilmington Convention Center to find a date for 2021.  One of the challenges we face in picking a date is March is a very busy month with races both locally and regionally. With this in mind, we are looking at moving a little earlier next year so you all can support the races that were cancelled.  It may not be perfect, but we are weighing our options and will notify you as soon as we solidify a date.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I paid the deferral fee before the race was cancelled, do I get a refund?
Yes, we will refund this fee minus the credit card processing fees lost.  This will show up on your credit card by the end of the week.

I bought a VIP Package, do I get refunded?
Yes, we will issue you a full refund minus the race fee and credit card processing fees.  This will show up on your credit card by the end of the week.

Can I give someone else my deferral?
Yes, you are welcome to give someone else your race entry.  You have from now until August 31st, 2020.  This option expires September 1st, 2020.  Mark your calendar now!  We understand some people may not be able to run either race, so this is why we are allowing you to give it to someone else.

What If I registered for the 5K or the Marathon Relay but I want to defer to the half and the full?
Yes, you can do this, but there will be an upcharge to what the normal price is for the half and full minus your 2020 5K or Relay Fee.

How much time do I have to use my FREE deferral?
Deferral option will last through August 31st, 2020 and expire September 1st.  We are choosing this date so we can plan better for both races and estimate numbers accordingly.  It also gives you time to plan for winter/spring 2021 (5 months).  If you don’t have 2021 plans yet, just register yourself to be 100% and you can always transfer to a friend later.

Why are you not offering a virtual option this year?
We thought about this option, but decided to keep things simple and offer deferrals to all participants.

Why are you not issuing refunds for the race fee?
We have worked tirelessly throughout the year to plan and put on this race.  A great deal of money has been spent on the 2020 event.  Race expenses come prior to race day: permits, staffing, advertising, licenses, promotions, awards, bibs,  and we will still be helping out our charitable partners in 2020. We simply cannot afford to refund everyone at this point.  We are athletes, and are all currently in the same situation with canceled events we planned to participate in.  We will not receive a refund nor do we expect it.  These things happen very infrequently and just know you will receive a top notch event next year. Here is a great article that helps all of us see what is happening in our industry and how we can help races survive.

This is very important and if you are racing with us we encourage you to please be sure you are on our email list.  If you are not receiving race emails, please email the director with a valid email.  Also follow us on social media.  We post all updates on Facebook and Instagram.

I am Active Duty and/or a Student, Do I receive a discount?

Are there any discounts available?

If you are active military or a veteran, please email us with your military email or a copy of your ID to wilmingtonncmarathon@gmail.com.  If you are a student in high school or college, email us with your student email or ID.  If you are a group or run club bringing several runners, email us with the details and we will issue you a group link with group rates.

Is there race day packet pickup?

Is there race day packet pickup?

NO!  All packets must be picked up at the expo from 11am to 8:30pm Friday to be guaranteed all of your items. Friends or Family can pick up your packet for you if you cannot make the expo on time.  We will also have BIB ONLY pickup race morning on Johnny Mercer Pier for $20. Purchase here if needed. Bib only means you can get your bib the morning of the race, but you will need to pick up your t-shirt and other items after the race.  You lose the guarantee that your shirt size will be available if you choose the bib only option race morning.  You must purchase the BIB ONLY option for race morning here for $20.

How does the marathon relay work?

The relay can have 2, 3 or 4 members.  Each participant is responsible for getting to and from the exchange point.  Relay exchange points all have parking.  Each relay leg is approximately 6 to 7 miles long.  Plan accordingly that one person drives to an exchange and the runner finishing will then drive that car to the finish.  All relay details will be sent to you on race week!

NO!  You can transfer to another runner by February 1st.  It is against USATF rules and the race rules to run for another runner.

Where should my family watch?

The race is point to point, so the first 13 miles you might see your runner early and then you should head downtown to watch in key areas around the finish line.  Having a bike would be the best for this race if you want to see your runner in Multiple areas.

What kind of swag is given to the runners?

All marathon, half marathon and relay runners will receive a t-shirt manufactured by Without Limits and a finisher medal.  These are very soft athletic fit t-shirts. 5K runners and 1-mile runners receive a t-shirt and a medal.  The t-shirt cutoff is February 1st.

The ONLY way to get a full refund is if you purchase the insurance during registration checkout.

I bought the $8 RACE INSURANCE, how do I make a claim?

Can I wear headphones?

Can I wear headphones?

Please note it is unsafe to wear headphones while running. Event organizers will not restrict headphone use and leave it up to the athlete on his/ her ability to follow direction while wearing headphone devices. If you do choose to wear headphones please keep the volume level down so you are able to hear and follow the direction of course volunteers. We have a unique course where you MUST listen to volunteers.  If you cannot hear a volunteer you have no excuses if you get led off-course.

How do I get to the start?

Shuttle Information

We will have shuttles from downtown to Wrightsville Beach, Johnny Mercer Pier from 4:30am to 7:00am.  During registration, you will select if you are taking these shuttles or finding your own transportation.   We need your certainty so we can plan for the appropriate amount of transportation.

If you decide to park at the start, we will have shuttles running from downtown back to the beach after the race until 1:30pm.

If you have the option to get dropped off and carpool, please use that option.  The better people plan with their own transportation, the faster everything will be.

We offer a complimentary bag drop at the start area. You can use the bag you receive at the expo for your gear bag. Our bag drop is to simply allow you to dress warm at the start and throw your clothes in our truck. The bags will be back downtown when you finish. There should be no keys, wallets, phones or anything important in this bag. We advise against putting anything of any value. We will take the clothing back downtown to the finish until 1:30pm. After 1:30pm, everything that is not picked up will be donated.

10K @ College and Market 8:50am (1:35:00 into the race)
Mile 11.5 – The Half Full Split 10:10am (2:55 into the race)
Mile 15.5 – Exit Ramp off Cape Fear Bridge 11:00am (3:45:00 into the race)

BISCUTS FROM WAFFLE HOUSE, BEER AND BUNDTINIS will be served at for each runner at the finish along with water and a banana.

There will be 10 aid stations but you will hit some more than once so you will make 14 passes at Aid Stations.  Each station will have 2-4 bathrooms. Water, Gatorade, and Cliff Gels will be served. Coke, Twizzlers and Oranges will be served for marathoners only.

Top 3 male and female finishers  as well as top 3 masters male and masters female will receive a cash prize in both the half and full marathon.

Medals will be given to all half and full marathon finishers along with marathon relay finishers and 5K/1 mile finishers.

Age group awards will also be given to the following age divisions: 14 and under,15-18, 19-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70+

Where is the best place to park?

Where is the best place to park?

If you are taking the morning shuttle from downtown to Wrightsville Beach, you can park any legal parking space downtown Wilmington and make your way to the shuttle pickup.  If you are parking at the beach in the morning, you will need to park in a non-metered spot so you do not get ticketed after 9am.  Wrightsville Beach Recreation area is about 1/2 mile from the start and will be your best parking option if you plan to park at the start.  You can then find transportation after the race back to the beach either using our shuttles or another form of transportation.

What Do I get with the Water Taxi Service?

Water Taxis will take you from the finish line over to the Battleship NC for mile 13-14 and the Relay Exchange.  Each relay team will receive 2 tickets, 1 for a runner to go over, and 1 to return.

Spectators can take the water taxi for $10 and have the pass for the day to tour Historic Downtown.  More info here

February 1st is the final day to transfer to another race or to another runner.  You can transfer to another race and pay the difference in price if the price is higher.  There is a $10 transfer fee.  You can also transfer at the expo, there is a $20 transfer fee at the expo

ABSOLUTELY!  The Wilmington NC Marathon is one of the top races in the country to qualify for Boston.  We try to put together a fast field so there is a better chance to qualify and get a fast time.  Our course is flat and has enough variation to keep you engaged.  After the race, we turn in all of our results to the BAA.  Both half and full marathon are certified courses and sanctioned by USATF.

You may have someone pick up your packet from the expo on Friday OR pay $20 to request special pickup on Saturday morning at the start.

You can walk as long as you meet course cutoff times.  This typically involves a walk/run method.
There are no baby joggers allowed.  There are no pets allowed

YES! As long as the event is not sold out, we take onsite registration.  We do NOT take registration on race morning.

Is there live tracking?

We have live tracking options using the phone app RACEJOY.  This costs nothing to the racer but you must run with your cell phone for it to work.  If you do not want to do this, the race will post live results every 15 to 30 minutes on our website.  We do not have live bib tracking throughout the course.
