DID COVID-19 SHAKE YOUR MOTIVATION TO RUN?

Here are some of our pointers to stay motivated!

  1. Reduce volume by 20%.  You might ask, aren’t I supposed to run more?  The situation we are experiencing is overwhelming.  Give your body a slight break in the mileage and put your efforts towards other forms of exercise that can benefit you long term as a runner.
  2. Get STRONG!  You can still run a little and do modified workouts, but get strong and work on your imbalances
  3. Keep strides in your plan.  Strides can always benefit you focusing on form and technique but keeping hard speed pounding to a minimum.
  4. Practice meditation and breathing: this can reduce stress and anxiety that you might feel from lack of racing, overwhelmed, or other stress you may have.
  5. Watch motivating movies or read motivating books!  BINGE on some motivation.  Write down goals for the fall and next spring.  SET YOURSELF UP FOR SUCCESS.

NEW LONG RUN RECOVERY

If you choose our Virtual Option for the 11th Annual Race, you will receive FREE Without Limits Runners Essentials Long Run Recovery formula.  We hope you enjoy it.  Learn more about the Long Run Recovery Nutritional Shake!

2020 CANCELLATION INSTRUCTIONS

Race Header
Runners,

As we move forward, we want to thank you again for choosing the NHRMC Wilmington NC Marathon.  On behalf of our staff, volunteers, and non-profit board, we are heartbroken over the cancellation of the 2020 race.  Over the last few weeks we have been doing our best to take the necessary steps to keep runners, spectators, vendors and volunteers safe. With the state mandate and now national emergency we were forced to cancel the event.

At this late stage we are unable to offer runners a refund because we have already incurred the costs of holding our race. We are giving ALL of our runners a FREE entry to next year’s race.

FROM NEW HANOVER REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER:

Our title sponsor New Hanover Regional Medical Center understands the extraordinary effort that goes into planning and preparing for marathons and we recognize how difficult this decision is for the many runners and the organizers who prepared for this event. As health providers, we also know the critical need to limit the spread of the COVID-19 virus and appreciate all those taking steps to protect our community and its most vulnerable citizens.

2020 OPTION

In the coming weeks, you will receive a reserved entry link to register for 2021 at no additional cost.

FREE DEFERMENT TO 2021 EVENT
COST: FREE
TIME TO DEFER: When registration opens through August 31st, 2020 (We hope to open registration by the end of the month)  This would also be the same time for another runner using your deferred entry.
COST AFTER August 31st, 2020: Full Price
HOW: You will receive a private link to register via www.runsignup.com that you can use or you can pass to a friend to use.   We will get this set up as soon as registration opens for 2021.

The Deferred entry is transferable, meaning, you can give this entry to another person if you cannot race next year.

If you cannot race or give your race entry to someone, we will allow you to defer to a 2021 Virtual option so you can get your bib, medal and shirt in 2021.  You can run your virtual option from this weekend to next year, we will call it a Virtual Year Race.  That way if you want to run it now, you can submit your results and we will mail you your 11th annual gear.

2021 DATE

We are currently working with the City of Wilmington, Town of Wrightsville Beach, the NCDOT and the Wilmington Convention Center to find a date for 2021.  One of the challenges we face in picking a date is March is a very busy month with races both locally and regionally. With this in mind, we are looking at moving a little earlier next year so you all can support the races that were cancelled.  It may not be perfect, but we are weighing our options and will notify you as soon as we solidify a date.

BATTLESHIP HALF MARATHON 10K and 5K FALL OPTION

We also want to give you an amazing opportunity and special discount to the North Carolina Battleship Half Marathon this fall on November 8th, 2020, Veterans Day Weekend. We are offering you a 20% OFF Entry into the 2020 Battleship NC Half Marathon, 10K or 5K. This is a huge discount for a top notch race that loops around the USS North Carolina BB-55, Greenfield Lake, and Downtown Wilmington. This is a great way to explore the North Carolina Battleship as we host packet pickup on the ship deck.  We hope this might be something you consider and another way to show our gratitude for being part of the NHRMC Wilmington Marathon. This event is produced by the those at The NHRMC Wilmington Marathon.  Use the code “battleship20” and register at www.battleshiphalfmarathon.com

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I paid the deferral fee before the race was cancelled, do I get a refund?
Yes, we will refund this fee minus the credit card processing fees lost.  This will show up on your credit card by the end of the week.

I bought a VIP Package, do I get refunded?
Yes, we will issue you a full refund minus the race fee and credit card processing fees.  This will show up on your credit card by the end of the week.

Can I give someone else my deferral?
Yes, you are welcome to give someone else your race entry.  You have from now until August 31st, 2020.  This option expires September 1st, 2020.  Mark your calendar now!  We understand some people may not be able to run either race, so this is why we are allowing you to give it to someone else.

What If I registered for the 5K or the Marathon Relay but I want to defer to the half and the full?
Yes, you can do this, but there will be an upcharge to what the normal price is for the half and full minus your 2020 5K or Relay Fee.

How much time do I have to use my FREE deferral?
Deferral option will last through August 31st, 2020 and expire September 1st.  We are choosing this date so we can plan better for both races and estimate numbers accordingly.  It also gives you time to plan for winter/spring 2021 (5 months).  If you don’t have 2021 plans yet, just register yourself to be 100% and you can always transfer to a friend later.

Why are you not offering a virtual option this year?
We thought about this option, but decided to keep things simple and offer deferrals to all participants.

Why are you not issuing refunds for the race fee?
We have worked tirelessly throughout the year to plan and put on this race.  A great deal of money has been spent on the 2020 event.  Race expenses come prior to race day: permits, staffing, advertising, licenses, promotions, awards, bibs,  and we will still be helping out our charitable partners in 2020. We simply cannot afford to refund everyone at this point.  We are athletes, and are all currently in the same situation with canceled events we planned to participate in.  We will not receive a refund nor do we expect it.  These things happen very infrequently and just know you will receive a top notch event next year. Here is a great article that helps all of us see what is happening in our industry and how we can help races survive.

Once again, I cannot put into words how deeply concerned we are about the impact of the Covid-19 virus and heartbroken on this cancellation. Now is the time to pause and reflect on our lives. We should have gratitude for our health and the ability to be physically able to participate in these events. Run on your own. Run in small groups. Post to social media. Maybe even try running without your watch. Sit on your back porch and count your blessings.

Our team is already working on 2021 to give you a tour of the Cape Fear Coast that you won’t forget. It will be fun, and we will remember to be grateful to run. Good luck with all of your events when they start back up again. Let’s pray and cross our fingers that we are able to lift the COVID-19 warnings soon and run the world!

Sincerely,

Tom Clifford and the NHRMC Wilmington Marathon Staff.

NHRMC Wilmington NC Marathon Madness

5 TIPS TO STAY HEALTHY FOR RACE WEEKEND
Location: Wilmington, NC
Type: 26.2 | 13.1 | 26.2 RELAY | 5K | 1 mile
We are less than 3 weeks away and we hope you are staying healthy.  The bulk of your training is now done and these last 3 weeks are critical to put the final touches on all of your hard work.  What does that mean?  Here are 5 tips from Without Limits that can help you get to the start line healthy.

1.  Don’t increase volume at this point in your training.  You have done the work, this week should be your first week of slight decrease in miles.

2.  Your last long run should NOT be the farthest.  You can still run long this weekend, but don’t make it your longest run of the training cycle.  That is a rookie mistake.

3. Take your vitamins!  One of our sponsors RUNNERS DAILY VITAMIN is a good choice to make sure your body is performing and recovering at its best.  RDV has essential vitamins to keep your immune system healthy such as 100% of Zinc, IRON, B-Vitamins, and Vitamin D3.  It also has a proprietary herbal endurance blend to help you increase endurance and recover!

4. Get a Massage.  Schedule a deep tissue massage, but not right before a hard workout or a long run.  Be sure the day after your massage is an easy run.

5. Stay hydrated.  Its still winter, and runners tend to skimp on fluids when its cool out.  Your body still needs them.  Keep sipping!

A PRE-RACE ATHLETE PACKET WILL COME OUT FRIDAY MARCH 13th WITH ALL RACE WEEKEND INFORMATION.  STAY TUNED!

Defining Moments

An accomplished athlete and businessman, Dave McGillivray has done nearly everything in the racing world — and he has some incredible stories and lessons to share.

McGillivray has helped lead the Boston Marathon since 1988, building it into a preeminent race and community event. He’s also conquered numerous athletic feats himself, including running across the U.S. in 80 consecutive days, completing the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon nine times and running his age in miles every year since he was 12. (He’s now 65.)

Through his experiences, McGillivray will talk at the 2020 WilmingtonBiz Conference & Expo about how people in our region can boost health and community.

Here’s a sampling of his other accomplishments:
• His 1981 New England Run was a triathlon (running, cycling, and swimming) of 1,522 miles throughout the six New England states. He raised $55,000 for the Jimmy Fund.

• In 1982, McGillivray ran the Boston Marathon in 3:14 while blindfolded and escorted by two guides to raise more than $10,000 for the Carroll Center for the Blind in Newton, Massachusetts..

• He traded his running shoes for swimming shorts in 1983 for the Jimmy Fund 24-Hour Swim. He swam for 24 consecutive hours in the Olympic-size Medford High School pool, swimming a total of 1,884 lengths and covering 26.2 miles (distance of Boston Marathon), again raising funds for the Jimmy Fund.

• Over the course of 14 days in 1983, he bicycled more than 1,000 miles throughout six New England states to raise money for a scholarship fund for McGillivray’s alma mater, Merrimack College.

• Also in 1986, he biked for 24 consecutive hours around a five-mile loop course in Medford while simultaneously directing the annual Bay State Triathlon, which was being held on the same course at the same time. He covered a total of 385 miles.

• McGillivray’s many endurance events for charity are legendary, including running 120 miles in 24 hours thru 31 Massachusetts cities; an 86-story, 1,575-step run up Empire State Building in 13 minutes and 27 seconds; and running, cycling and swimming 1,522 miles thru six New England states while raising $55,000 for the Jimmy Fund.

• In 2018, he completed the World Marathon Challenge: seven marathons on seven continents in seven days.

• McGillivray has logged more than 150,000 miles, most for charity, raising millions for worthy causes. He’s completed 156 marathons, which include 47 consecutive Boston Marathons (with 32 run at night after his race director duties are fulfilled).

• His personal bests? Marathon: 2:29:58 and for the Ironman: 10:36:42.

• McGillivray, DMSE Sports and his DMSE Children’s Foundation have raised more than $50 million for various charities, including: The Jimmy Fund, Carroll Center for the Blind, Cystic Fibrosis, Lazarus House, Massachusetts Dietetic Association, Massachusetts Special Olympics, Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD), Muscular Dystrophy Association, Sports Museum of New England and Wrentham State School.

“Destination-to-Destination” Run Course and Event Brand Unveiled

Posted by

NHRMC Wilmington NC Marathon Madness celebrates its second decade with major course changes.

Wilmington, NC – Southeastern North Carolina’s largest running event is taking a new turn in 2020 with an all new course and updated nameThe 11th Annual NHRMC WILMINGTON NC MARATHON MADNESS” now highlights the city of Wilmington, North Carolina. The event is tentatively planning on hosting the runners’ expo and finish-line celebration in and around the Wilmington Convention Center.

“We are thrilled to host a race that tours the City of Wilmington,” said Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo. “Wilmington is growing rapidly and large events like the NHRMC Wilmington Marathon Madness will help bring out of town guests to tour our city and have a great experience with an excellent first-class course.  We are excited as a City and look forward to great things in spring of 2020.”

The majority of the race course will take place on Wilmington roads. The biggest change participants will notice is a world class, point-to-point route that will take runners from the pristine coast of Wrightsville Beach, to the historic Cape Fear Riverfront for the finish-line and post-race celebration.

“This is a dream course for runners, very flat with only a few turns and highlighting the City of Wilmington along the way making it better than a point-to-point race. This will be a true ‘destination-to-destination race’ that runners from all over the country will appreciate, “said Race Director Tom Clifford. “The City of Wilmington and our partners like New Hanover Regional Medical Center have been incredibly supportive to help this vision and dream come to life.”

“New Hanover Regional Medical Center has supported this event for many years and is proud to be the title sponsor,” said Carolyn Fisher, NHRMC Director of Marketing and Public Relations. “We hope the new course will generate excitement and encourage even more people to challenge themselves to train and run to improve their overall health and well-being.”

The race, which averages over 3,500 participants annually, will utilize the mantra “Span the Cape Fear Coast from Wrightsville Beach to Downtown Wilmington.”  Highlights of the race will include a larger expo Downtown Wilmington, a sunrise start at Wrightsville Beach, a picturesque run course spanning six bridges providing runners unparalleled views of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, the Cape Fear River and the serene vantage points around Greenfield Lake.

Clifford added that the course is tentative to the city’s permitting process and changes could occur based on traffic flow and construction and that the final course will lessen the traffic impact making it easier for motorists during the event.

Clifford stressed his appreciation for over ten years of community support, “As always, the event will give the runners the opportunity to race a fast course, see historic sites and enjoy many beautiful areas around our city. We have had an amazing 10 years on the east side of town and are very thankful for the Landfall Community, UNCW, and Mayfaire for their hospitality and support.”
